About the Project
Fusobacterim nucleatum (FN) is a bacterium found in the teeth of practically all humans. Recently it was realized that FN is found in several types of tumors such as colorectal, esophageal, pancreatic, and breast adenocarcinomas. Clinical and epidemiological research has now firmly linked FN to enhanced tumor progression and metastases, protecting the tumors from immune cell attack and poor prognosis of these tumors, suggesting that their removal from tumor sites could benefit the patient and improve cancer therapy outcomes. In the current personalized grant we will focus on breast cancer. Through the complementary expertise of four leading researchers in breast cancer (Prof. Tanir Allweis), fusobacteriology (Prof. Gilad Bachrach), glycobiology (Prof. Vered Padler-Karavani), and tumor immunology (Prof. Ofer Mandelboim), our group is uniquely suited to study F. nucleatum in breast cancer and to develop specific personalized treatment for patients with tumors colonized by this bacterium, in a truly synergistic manner (please see Figure above).
