IPMP Grantee Developing Device to Identify Individual Proteins within Seconds
Led by Prof. Amit Meller, the Meller Lab at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa (Biomedical Engineering) is developing nano channel devices that can separate, identify and count thousands of individual proteins within seconds. His research is supported by the Israel Precision Medicine Partnership, which awarded him and his collaborators at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem a grant of NIS 4.7 million in 2019 during their first program cycle.
Meller's lab demonstrated the ability to fabricate custom devices in which proteins are forced using a strong electrical field, and imaged with single molecule precision. Their findings were recently published in the journal Scientific Reports; the complete article can be found below. The next step will be to use these devices to analyze clinical samples in patients with suspected age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in collaboration with Dr. Itay Chowers and Dr. Jaime Levy of Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem.
